AMSEL is creating the new best practices in equity efforts in education. We provide leadership in equity, inclusion, and belonging, focusing on opportunity, achievement, and the social-emotional well-being of students and educators. Members of AMSEL lead traditional and charter districts and independent schools across Massachusetts. With broad expertise, AMSEL is uniquely poised to center underrepresented populations who face systemic barriers that impact their school experiences. Our goal as DEI practitioners is to center equity and elevate voices furthest away from social justice.
Our mission is deeply inclusive; we foster a collective sense of engagement, affirmation, and belonging, where everyone is proud to be a community member. We embrace diverse perspectives and are attentive to power disparities, primarily as it affects marginalized members of our school communities. As practitioners we aim to dismantle the institutional racism that institutions can produce and reproduce inequities and exclusion. We aim to develop a shared practice of inquiry and a culture of shared responsibility to identify, challenge, and dismantle institutional oppression.
We acknowledge that we are gathered on the ancestral lands of many bands of Indigenous people who cultivated this land and made it their home before it was forcibly taken and colonized by European settlers. Click here to read more.
We acknowledge the legacy of slavery in our region and the enslaved African people whose labor was exploited for generations to help establish the economy of our region and the United States, specifically the production and harvest of surplus crops and land cultivation. Click hear to read more.
